The English expression the hoi polloi (/ ˌhɔɪ pəˈlɔɪ /; from Ancient Greek οἱ πολλοί (hoi polloí) 'the many') was borrowed from Ancient Greek, where it means "the many " or, in the strictest sense, "the people".
